MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA type-c) is a 16-amino acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene. It acts as a retrograde mitochondrial signal that translocates to the nucleus in response to metabolic stress to regulate nuclear gene expression, AMPK activation, and insulin sensitivity.
